Black skinny jeans, very clean black boots and a plain white t-shirt, topped off with a black and white varsity jacket. It’s a deliberate choice – as Franco says, “You’d much more likely catch me in an outfit that’s two-toned, as opposed to flashy colours or logos or designs.”
Dave Franco share his style tips .
How would you describe your style?
I like very basic items of clothing that are well made. So you’ll mostly find me in jeans and a white t-shirt, but that white t-shirt is something I’ll spend a little bit of money on because I’ll probably wear it four times a week. My favourite brand of jeans is Levi’s Made & Crafted – they just seem to fit my girly, slight frame the best.
What’s your best tip for summer dressing?
It’s tough because in LA, which is where I live, it gets pretty hot and I wish that I looked better in shorts. But I have pretty dainty, girly legs that I don’t necessarily love to show off. My summer outfit is pretty similar to my winter outfit, minus the jacket.
Who is your style icon?
Ryan Gosling has cool style. I feel like he sticks to the basics but adds just a tiny bit of flair to make his wardrobe feel unique. I’m a fan of the jacket in Drive but I would never wear it because it’s such an iconic jacket and it would just feel like you’re ripping something off.
What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe right now?
I would say these shoes I’m wearing. They’re Common Projects boots and I like that you can wear them for any occasion, whether it’s just hanging with your friends or actually going out for the night, or even to some events. I feel like they cover all bases.
What trend do you think needs to be retired immediately?
I’m into jeans with holes, but I’m not into jeans where there are more holes than not. Where you literally see more flesh than you see jean.
What are the biggest mistakes that men make with clothes?
For me, comfort and fit are more important than anything else. Even if someone handed me the most beautiful, expensive jacket in the world, if it didn’t quite fit right I probably wouldn’t wear it because I wouldn’t feel comfortable. If you feel comfortable then that’s going to come through your general demeanour as well.
What’s the best piece of style advice you’ve ever heard?
Not to try too hard and to dress in a way that feels true to you, as opposed to trying to copy someone else’s style.
What is your must-have accessory?
I don’t have a lot of accessories – I don’t think I’ve ever owned a piece of jewellery. But I appreciate a good backpack, I’ll take more risks or go a little flashier with a backpack than I would with the rest of my wardrobe.
Do you wear a watch?
I own a watch that I really like but I never think to wear it. I don’t know if it’s because I like the more stripped down look in general, and I like to just simplify my outfit wherever possible. What percentage of people who wear a watch would you say actually use it to look at the time? I have a friend who has an Apple watch and he hasn’t charged it in three months, but he just likes the look of it.
If you had to stick to a certain colour palette, what would it be?
Blacks and greys. I feel like I can pretty much wear every single shirt in my wardrobe with my black jeans. And vice versa, I can wear my black t-shirts with any of my other colour jeans.
Where’s the best place to go to buy clothes?
My favourite shop in LA is Kelly Cole, which is this tiny little vintage shop on La Brea. The guy who runs it, Kelly, has put together this amazing collection of vintage t-shirts, mainly tour t-shirts from bands. I have this incredible George Carlin sweatshirt, it’s just a picture of his face and it says ‘George Carlin comedian’, but you know this sweatshirt has been places and it feels like one of a kind.
